Netflix and Brill. Top 5 shows to look out for on Netflix

Long gone are the days when, after a long hard day procrastinating at University, students would come home and watch TV before another night out. BBC, ITV and Sky used to be the home of the most gripping shows and belly laughs aplenty from the comedy side. But a new phenomenon has gripped the nation; Netflix.

There is so much choice on the site however, it is often hard to pick what you are going to sit down and get obsessed over next. So here are a few shows that I have seen that I have seen and got obsessed over, and perhaps your lives could be ruined to.

5. Stranger Things

The story of how four young friends stumble upon the Government’s secrets is a recent addition to the site. Without giving too much away, it follows the story of Will Buyers, a child, who is kidnapped. With the hunt for the boy underway, everyone involved begins to realise that not everything is as is seems and they are all in danger. It’s well worth a watch.

4. House of Cards

Politics has never been one of my strong suits, but this show has certainly got that gritty edge to intrigue even the hardest politics snub. The show focuses on Frank Underwood, a US Congressman played excellently by Kevin Spacey. The show starts off with a new President being elected, and everyone else, including Underwood, taking their positions with him in power. A good watch if you want something to think about.

3. The Crown

Another recent entry to the world of Netflix, The Crown follows a young Queen Elizabeth II as she ascends to the throne at the tender age of 18. The show, featuring the likes of former Doctor Who star Matt Smith as a young Prince Phillip, has a lot of intrigue and some fine acting and is well worth a watch.

2. Better Call Saul

Another feast of great acting and storylines come from Better Call Saul. The story of the show follows Breaking Bad’s Saul Goodman ten years before the events of the show, when he was a defence lawyer Jimmy McGill. Full of references and characters from Breaking Bad, this show is a worthy follow up to one of the best television shows of all time and is well worth a watch.

1.Breaking Bad

Technically, this iconic show isn’t what is known as a ‘Netflix original’ – I.e. not shown first on the site. But Netflix is the only way you can watch it in the UK unless you have the DVD box-set, which I have. In case you have been living under a rock for the past few years, here is a little about it. The story follows Walter White (played incredibly by Bryan Cranston), a chemistry teacher who finds out he has terminal cancer. To pay for treatment and also to provide money for his family when he dies, he decides to go into business with a former student Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) and start selling crystal meth. With numerous incredible acting, storylines and villains that usually are spared for films, this show is no doubt one of the most gripping and engaging shows of all time. You simply have to watch it!
